Gi Maintenance: 3 tips to keep your armor in top shape

June 29, 2023

Competing in Jiu-Jitsu is a process that requires commitment, especially when it comes to preparation. Whether you’re a veteran athlete or a newcomer to competitions, there’s always that same pressure to create a strategy, practice your strong points, and keep a balanced diet. Having your gi in top shape is also a good feature for your competitive style.

But how do you go about it? Is it better to wash the gi every day or just leave it in the sun from time to time? Questions like these are commonplace among practitioners, so we have prepared three definitive tips to help you keep your armor in its best condition ahead of your training sessions and championship.

Check for patches and loose threads before washing

It doesn’t matter how careful you are with it, if you regularly use your gi, it will begin to show signs of wear and tear sooner or later. But while that is unavoidable, you can prevent the problem from needlessly growing by thoroughly checking your gi before washing it. Unchecked patches and loose threads can cause permanent damage to your gear, so make sure to fully inspect your gi before putting it into the washing machine.

Cold water and mild chemicals only

Employing the right methods to wash your gi is paramount when it comes to maintenance. For starters, use only cold water, as hot water can lead to shrinkage and loss of durability. Remember to also avoid using strong chemicals, as these will weaken the fibers of your gi over time. If you have a colored gi, it’s recommended that you turn it inside out and wash each piece separately to avoid color bleeding. These methods, coupled with a gentler washing cycle, will ensure that your gear is looking and performing its best on the mats.

Avoid the heat

As with the washing tip, avoid the heat during the drying process. Leaving your gi in the sun or using a dryer can damage and shrink your gi while slowly fading its colors and weakening the fibers. For best results, hang your gi in a shaded and cool place where there’s constant airflow. If you need to iron your gi, do so in low heat, and don’t leave the iron in constant contact with the gear.

Don't forget to constantly inspect your gear for signs of wear or fraying and always fold it properly before storing it to avoid creases. By following these tips, you’ll maintain the durability and appearance of your gi, ensuring it lasts longer and remains in good condition for your competitive endeavors.
