Weekend Recap: Four tournaments keep the action high around the globe

Another weekend for the books here at AJP, with the organization steady in its mission of changing as many lives as possible through Jiu-Jitsu. This time around, four tournaments took place in cities around the world, With Internationals in Peru, Mongolia, and Mexico while Brazil hosted a packed Regional in the northeastern part of the country. Without further ado, let's check out the highlights from each championship!

AJP Tour Piura International Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2024: Patricio Loor takes the double gold in Peru

This Saturday, July 13th, the National University of Piura was the stage upon which competitors of all ages and graduations showcased their skills as they chased the gold and glory of becoming an AJP champion. The highlight of the competition was the Ecuadorian Patricio Loor (Predador), who went above and beyond with his performance and conquered the coveted double gold.

His first challenge was the 94kg division. Up against the local Luis Del Carpio in the final, Patricio seized control of the match early on and spent the following five minutes of regulated time further increasing his advantage on the scoreboard. When the clock ran out, a whopping 27-0 score gave Patricio his first gold medal that day.

Patricio returned to the mats later on, this time gunning for the Open Heavyweight division title. His final opponent would be his fellow countryman and teammate Jorge Eduardo Villarroel, who managed to put up a solid fight throughout the match but was unable to pump the brakes on Patricio, who got his second trip to the top of the podium with a 3-0 score.

AJP Tour Ulaanbaatar International Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2024: Professional black belts fight with and without the gi for the gold in Mongolia

Taking place on both days of the weekend, the Ulaanbaatar International landed at the Wrestling Palace in Mongolia and brought about another stellar AJP tournament. Welcoming athletes from all levels to come and put their training to the test, the competition was highlighted by the Professional black belt brackets that were defined with and without the gi.

On the first day, Japan's Hiryu Niwa (Art of Jiu Jitsu) conquered the 69kg division. In a final match against the local Erdenebaatar Ulziitogtokh (Ralph Gracie Mongolia), Hiryu fought a well-balanced match and, after five minutes of regulated time, came out on top with a 3-0 score, earning his gold medal and the 600 ranking points.

On the second day, two competitors had their chances to shine. First, in the women's 95kg division, Mongoljin Ganbaatar (Garuda Jiu Jitsu Academy) went all-out and defeated Khulan Batbaatar (Thunder BJJ Academy) to take the title. Then, Batbayar Bayarsaikhan (Arte Suave BJJ Academy Mongolia) fought without the gi and landed a last-minute submission on Itgel Khosbayar (BB Jiu Jitsu Academy) to seize his place atop the 120kg division podium.

AJP Tour Cancun International Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2024: Flor Chavez takes the gold in Mexico

Also taking place on both days of the weekend, the Cancun International brought the organization's signature action to the Poliforum Playa del Carmen, giving local and foreign athletes a chance to show the fruits of their training while fighting for gold and ranking points in one of the most sought-after touristic cities in the world.

Among the many champions who rose at the tournament, the local brown belt Flor Chavez (Wolfpack Jiu Jitsu Mexico) was a standout. Facing the Mexican black belt Diana Rodriguez (Brasa CTA), Flor led a battle with a lot of back and forth as both athletes scored multiple times over the course of the regulated time. At the end of it all, a 7-4 score gave Flor the win and the title in her home country.

AJP Tour North East Brazil Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2024: Eduardo Forte conquers the double gold in Natal

Also taking place this weekend, the North East Brazil Regional landed at the Ginasio do SESI Clube in Natal for two days of high-level competition. Welcoming colored and black belts alike, the tournament had its five fight areas packed with competitors at all times as athletes sought to reach the top of their respective divisions.

A standout in the competition, the local Eduardo Forte (Gracie Barra) caught the eyes of the attending audience by conquering both his weight class and the Open Lightweight division. Starting in the 77kg bracket, Eduardo first scored 12-0 before ultimately submitting Iago Lobo (SAS Team) to advance to the final. Going up against Augusto Alves (Checkmat International) in the last match, Eduardo went all-out from the start and got the submission at the one-minute mark to take his first gold.

With one medal already hanging from his shoulders, Eduardo returned to the battlefield aiming to take the Open Lightweight division title. In the bracket, Eduardo first outscored Jonatan Souza (Commando Group) with a narrow 1-0 in the semifinal and then, in the gold round, came out on top against Vinicius Andrade (Commando Group) with a submission at the very last minute of the match.
