ADWPJJC 2024: Masters take the stage and use their experience to beat the qualifiers

November 12, 2024

After the Youths and Amateurs showed their best performances in the ADWPJJC 2024, it's time for the athletes from the Master category to climb the mats and show what they're made of. Starting this Tuesday, November 12th, the Abu Dhabi World Master Jiu-Jitsu Championship 2024 took over the Mubadala Arena, in the UAE, and brought some of the most experienced competitors to fight for the tournament's coveted gold medal and the whopping 4000 global ranking points.

On the first day of the Master competition, there was no shortage of thrills as athletes joined the country qualifiers for a shot at showing their skills in the main brackets of their respective weight divisions. With a lot of action in all 11 fight areas, one of the highlights of the day goes to the Brazilian João Miyao, a PSLPB Cícero Costha representative who entered a true round-robin for the chance to compete in the 56kg division. Going up against MOD UAE's Rafael Gonçalves and Angelo Guilherme, João had his fearsome Jiu-Jitsu on full display as he outmaneuvered his opponents and ended both matches with tight baratoplatas.

Another standout from the qualifier rounds was ADMA Brazil's Fellipe Andrew, who went through four opponents to save his spot in the 94kg division. Starting his campaign in the quarter-finals, Fellipe landed a submission win over Six Blades' Lafayette Pinheiro and then got the three taps once again in the semifinal, beating Igor Sousa, from MOD UAE, around the mid-point of the bout. For his last duel, Fellipe went up against Jackson Sousa, a Cantagalo Jiu-Jitsu London representative who reached the final after submitting Marcus Fernandes in the semis. With no submissions from either side, the final round took up the entirety of the regulated time, but Fellipe managed to seize and maintain control through most of it, taking a 9-0 win and putting his name on tomorrow's main bracket.

With the qualifier round completed, the stage is now set for the main brackets of the Master category to bring even more action this Wednesday, November 13th. Watch the action live on TX7.com, and follow @ajptour to stay up-to-date on all the highlights of the tournament.
