ADGS London: Masters highlight the tournament on the second day
April 12, 2025
The Abu Dhabi Grand Slam World Tour London continues to bring memorable duels to the Copper Box Arena. After the Amateurs heated up the mats yesterday, the competition opened its doors for athletes of the Youth and Master categories this Saturday, April 12th, mixing rookies and battle-hardened veterans in the AJP mats to add even more action to the tournament. With some of the most experienced black belts in the sport, the Master 1 category was the highlight of the day as each competitor showcased their skills while seeking the top spot on the podium.
Representing East Coast Jiu Jitsu Academy, the Canadian Shane Fishman conquered the ADGS gold after an amazing run in the 85kg division. Entering a bracket stacked with talented competitors, Shane had two challenging duels on his way to the final, outscoring Julio Junior in the quarterfinal by 4-1 and then beating Mohamed Alamri in the semis by 9-3. Shane's final opponent was the Polish Igor Dziag, a top 10 athlete in this season's global ranking who made his way to the gold round after submitting Bruno Borges and then getting a points win over Lucas Moutinho in the semifinal. But despite being up against a top-tiered AJP athlete, Shane showed his mental fortitude and technical knowledge as he seized and maintained the upper hand throughout the match, scoring six points before ultimately locking a winning ezekiel choke around the four-minute mark of the duel to become the champion.
On the women's side, the Spaniard Georgina Contel used her powerful game to take the top spot on the podium and bring a victory to the Humbling Jiu Jitsu Club team. Competing in the 55kg division, Georgina opened the bracket by defeating Magdalena Maria in the semifinal, showcasing her technical prowess as she landed a narrow 4-2 score to advance to the final. Her next opponent was Francesca Reda, an Italian athlete who used her prowess to land a 2-0 score against Kaisa Paunu in the semis and save her spot in the fight for the gold. The final bout started off very balanced, with neither side getting a meaningful advantage against the other, but Georgina didn't take long to break the stalemate and quickly attacked with a deadly armbar, getting the three taps and the division title.
Other Masters highlighting the tournament were the PSLPB Cícero Costha representative João Miyao, who made his way through the 62kg division and seized the 62kg division title with a 15-4 score over Tommy Yip; Commando Group's Thiago Marques, who got two submission wins on his way to become the 77kg champion; and Lina Grosset, who represented Cercle Tissier and overcame three opponents to reach the top of the 62kg division podium.
With two days down for the count, the ADGS London sets the stage for its grand finale as it prepares to welcome the Professional category to show their skills in the United Kingdom this Sunday, April 13th.
