ADGS Istanbul: Professionals close the event with outstanding battles for the title

After three days of high-octane action at the Ayhan Şahenk Spor Salonu in Turkey, the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam World Tour Istanbul has been concluded. Starting last Friday with the Master category and then bringing the Youth and Amateur categories yesterday, the competition reached its apex this Sunday, June 29th, with the powerhouses of the Professional category taking the stage with all their technique and grit to fight for gold, glory, and a whopping 2000 global ranking points reserved for each of the champions.

Highlighting the last day of the tournament, the black belts once again lived up to the moniker "Elite of Jiu-Jitsu", bringing the best of their games to the AJP mats and showing the whole world what it takes to compete at the highest level in the sport. MEN

56kg - Omar Alsuwaidi vs Bruno Borges

Fighting out of the UAE, Omar Alsuwaidi brought his skill set to Turkey and struck gold in the 56kg division. Coming from a submission win against compatriot Haitham Hanawi in the semifinal, Omar ended up facing Bruno Borges in the last match and took the lead in the scoreboard after going up from the double pull. For his part, Bruno fought tooth and nail throughout the regulated time, scoring multiple times and bringing some really dangerous moments with his passing attempts, but Omar managed to avoid the movements and emerged victorious with a narrow 5-4 score.

62kg - Khaled Alshehhi vs Matheus Onda

Another Emirati powerhouse rising to the top of the ADGS Istanbul was Khaled Alshehhi, who put on an impressive performance against Matheus Onda in the 62kg final. With the Brazilian taking two points on the scoreboard by going up from the double pull consecutively, Khaled put his dangerous guard to work and started whittling away at his opponent's advantage, getting one point for a sweep attempt before actually sweeping and putting the score at 3-2. From there, the match was a one-sided show by Khaled, with the UAE athlete going for guard passes and back takes to end the duel with an astounding 11-2 score.

69kg - João Mendes vs Leonardo Neves

With three opponents standing between himself and the title, João Mendes "Bisnaga" climbed the bracket and took the 69kg title. Facing the Portuguese Leonardo Neves in the gold round, Bisnaga opened the scoreboard going up from the double pull and started pressuring Leonardo's guard, scoring another point for almost passing and using his technique to control the match until the clock ran out. At the end of it all, a 2-0 score gave the Atos athlete the win and the top spot on the podium.

77kg - Jefferson Goteu vs Lucas Protasio

In another chapter of the rivalry, Jefferson Goteu got the better of Lucas Protasio for the 77kg gold medal. With both sides coming from tough battles in the bracket and being very aware of each other's game, the match took up the entirety of the regulated time and golden score, with neither athlete exposing themselves too much and leaving the result at the hands of the judges, who decided that Jefferson had been more effective in his performance and gave him the victory.

85kg - Pablo Custodia vs Jonatham Silva

Submitting two out of the three opponents that stood between himself and the final, including a very quick win against the favorite Uanderson Ferreira in the semifinal, MOD UAE representative Pablo Custodia entered the gold round and overcame Jonatham Silva for the 85kg title. Also coming from two wins via submission, Jonatham held his ground and managed to tie the score at 1-1, but Pablo managed to land a tie-breaker and ended the match at 2-1 to secure the top spot on the podium.

94kg - Belmir Ahmespahic vs Clemer Canario

Representing Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belmir Ahmespahic overcame all three of his opponents and became the 94kg champion. Kicking off his campaign with a submission over Russian powerhouse Tamerlan Eslemesov and then outscoring Telmo Castro in the semifinal, Belmir entered the gold round and went up against Brazil's Clemer Canario in a tough battle, opening the scoreboard early on and controlling his adversary's moves to avoid any dangerous moments throughout the bout. In the final minute of the duel, however, the athletes simultaneously launched submission attacks on the foot, and, upon careful consideration, the judges understood that Clemer made an illegal move, giving Belmir the win via disqualification.

120kg - Felipe Bezerra vs Wallace Costa

Felipe Bezerra once again reigns over the 120kg division. After facing Mahir Zuka and Alexander Sak on the bracket, Felipe ended up facing Wallace Costa in a very balanced final match, with the latter bringing many dangerous moments for the former throughout the bout. Despite that, Felipe used his pressure and all the tricks of his game to stay ahead on the scoreboard, taking the win and the title with a narrow 7-6 score to once again stand at the top of the heaviest division.

WOMEN

49kg - Grasielle Brandão vs Diana Teixeira

The GFTeam representative Grasielle Brandão added another title to her resumé after a tough battle against Diana Teixeira in the 49kg final. Working from the top, Grasielle opened the scoreboard with a guard pass attempt and earned a single point. Diana responded with a sweep attack and Grasielle ended up walking away from the fight area to escape, putting the former in the lead with one point for the attempt and another as a penalty to Grasielle for avoiding combat. In the final moments of the match, however, Grasielle almost managed to pass the guard yet again and tied the scoreboard at 2-2, taking the title for being the last to score in the duel.

55kg - Gabriela Pereira vs Laurie Rocha

Gabriela Pereira showcased her strategy against Laurie Rocha and became the 55kg division champion. Opening the scoreboard by going up from the double pull, Gabriela unleashed her pressure and started looking for any gaps in Laurie's defenses, taking another point for almost passing the guard and controlling the match to come out on top with a 2-0 score.

62kg - Tamara Toros vs Maria Luisa Delahaye

Landing a last-minute submission, Tamara Toros got the better of Maria Luisa Delahaye and took the 62kg title. Coming from another tough battle against Lina Grosset in the semifinal, Tamara saw her opponent take the lead on the scoreboard with a 1-0 and started looking for a way to turn the tables, while Maria used her technical prowess to control the flow of the match. The deciding moment came about in the final stretch of the bout, with Tamara slipping to Maria's back and locking a tight choke to conquer the win and the gold medal with only a few seconds remaining on the clock.

70kg - Laura Sieradzan vs Aleksandra Plemiashova

Fighting out of Poland, Laura Sieradzan took the 70kg title after overcoming Aleksandra Plemiashova in a very balanced final match. With no submissions coming from either side, the duel took up the entirety of the regulated time, with Laura securing her lead on the scoreboard and controlling the bout until its final moments to come out on top with a 1-0 score.
