MEN
56kg - Bruno Borges vs Josue Braga
Bruno Borges added another title to his extensive resumé during his latest trip to his home country. Up against some tough customers in the 56kg bracket, the Abu Dhabi Police Academy athlete started his campaign by landing a 3-0 win over Jorge Nakamura followed by an incredible submission victory in the semis against Oziel Carvalho, who conquered that same division title in the Master category and had been on a roll up with two dominating fights up until that point. In the final, Bruno went up against Josue Braga in a balanced match, with both sides scoring multiple times throughout the regulated time while also avoiding the more dangerous attacks. At the end of it all, a 6-4 score gave Bruno the win and the gold medal.
62kg - Jhonathan Angelim vs Iago Chagas
Submitting half of his matches in the ADGS Rio, the GFTeam ace Jhonatham Angelim became the 62kg champion with some impressive performances on his way to the top. After getting the three taps from both Renan Vieira and Gonzalo Argañaraz, and beating Anderson da Trindade by 2-1 in the semifinal, Jhonathan had his most challenging opponent at the end as he fought for the title with Igor Chagas, a talented athlete who found his way to the final with back-to-back victories against Enrique Guerrero and Matheus Onda early in the bracket. The ensuing match was incredibly balanced and saw both sides struggling to make any meaningful progress throughout the regulated time and Golden Score, with two penalties issued for the contenders by the time the match ended. With the score tied at 3-3 but with no one to score first or last, the result was left to the judges, who decided in favor of Jhonathan and gave him the title.
69kg - Kevin Gabriel vs Ricardo Guimarães
Representing Commando Group in the 69kg division, Kevin Gabriel overcame five opponents and took the coveted ADGS gold medal in Rio de Janeiro. Starting with a submission win over Geovanni Lira in the 16th-finals, Kevin kept his momentum going and outscored the likes of Nurzhan Batyrbekov, Arthur Carvalhães, and Thiago Macedo on his way to the final, in which he found himself face-to-face with Ricardo Guimarães. Also coming from four victories, Ricardo used his game to land a couple of points, but Kevin didn't take long to seize the lead and ended the match with a 5-2 score to reign over the weight class.
77kg - Lucas Protasio vs Mateo Ruiz
Fighting in his homeland, Lucas Protasio found his way back to the top of the ADGS podium and added another title for the Checkmat International team. Kicking off his campaign with an 8-0 win over Sandro Cantos, Lucas used his technical prowess to defeat Darlan Casaca by 5-0 and Guilherme Fernandes by 6-0 before entering the final to face Mateo Ruiz. Having beaten Erick Chaves, Matheus Luna, and the favorite Jefferson Goteu on his side of the bracket, Mateo was a force to be reckoned with, and he made that very clear during the gold round, bringing many dangerous moments throughout the incredibly balanced bout for the lead of the weight class. For his part, Protasio held his ground and managed to keep himself ahead on the scoreboard, taking his final win with a narrow 2-1 score to become the champion.
85kg - Uanderson Ferreira vs Rui Neto
The Brazilian showman Uanderson Ferreira takes another title and becomes the 85kg division champion in his homeland. A Baniyas Jiu-Jitsu Club representative, Uanderson started off with a 3-0 win over Robson Gomes in the eight-finals, followed by a narrow 2-1 score against Amezio Cardoso in the quarters and a walkover victory over Mikael Rhaillander to face his longtime rival Rui Neto in the gold round. Coming from four consecutive victories in his side of the bracket, Rui was ready to spoil his counterpart's plans for the title, but Uanderson's explosive moves and strategic game gave him the edge he needed to outmaneuver his foe, taking the lead and controlling the match to emerge victorious by 3-1.
94kg - Vinicius Liberati vs Pedro Silva
Representing Fratres Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Vinicius Liberati defeated four opponents and rose to the top of the 94kg division. Kicking off his campaign with an 8-0 win over Gabriel Gois, Vinicius went on to beat Wesley Silva by 1-0 and Macksuel Sousa by 5-1 before entering the final to face Pedro Silva, who beat Ruan Oliveira, Adrian Almeida, and Daniel Valentim on his side of the bracket. Facing his last foe for the day, Vinicius decided to change his approach and unleashed his Jiu-Jitsu, completely dominating Pedro and scoring 13-0 until the final moments of the bout, when he found his chance and ended the match with a tight submission.
120kg - Felipe Bezerra vs Fellipe Andrew
Felipe Bezerra returned to the ADGS mats to claim another title and reaffirm his iron grip on the 120kg division. Starting with a narrow 4-3 win over Pedro Pimenta, the Commando Group black belt continued advancing through the bracket by beating Gabriel Oliveira by 4-1 in the quarters and Antonio Assef by 8-0 in the semifinal. The final opponent turned out to be the fearsome Fellipe Andrew, who managed to take down the likes of Marcos Carrozzino and Luiz Henrique Betta on his way to the gold round. With no submissions from either side, the match was incredibly balanced from beginning to end, with Felipe taking the lead and using his pressure to control the flow of the battle until the clock ran out to become the champion with a 3-2 score.
WOMEN
49kg - Grasielle Brandão vs Leticia Gomes
Representing GFTeam, Grasielle Brandão is once again back on top of the 49kg division. After beating her teammate Barbara Silva with a quick submission in the semifinal, Grasielle advanced to the gold round and ran into Leticia Gomes, another dangerous GFTeam athlete who got her shot to fight for the title after beating the talented Diana Teixeira on her side of the bracket. Despite being up against a tough opponent, Grasielle kept her cool and used her game to take the lead on the scoreboard early on, landing a 3-0 over Leticia before finding her chance and quickly submitting around the one-minute mark to secure the top spot on the podium.
55kg - Gabriela Pereira vs Evellyn Azevedo
The 55kg division gold medal went to Gabriela Pereira after a very balanced final match against Evellyn Azevedo. Coming from victories over Mikaele Damaceno and Ana Vitoria Pantoja in the bracket, Gabriela was ready to add another win to her campaign but Evellyn, who had submitted every single opponent so far, had other plans and the duel quickly moved into a stalemate, with neither side managing to land a submission attack or indeed any movement that could give them a large advantage on points. Having scored last in the 3-3 tie that sat on the scoreboard by the end of the bout, Gabriela took the win and brought the title for the Brothers Club team.
62kg - Vitoria Vieira vs Ana Keyla Queiroz
Submitting four out of her five opponents, Vitoria Vieira took the top spot on the 62kg podium. With quick submissions landed on Milene Silva, Maria Luisa Delahaye, and Helena Romagialli, the GFTeam athlete reached the semifinal and got the three taps from Any de Oliveira to secure her spot in the fight for the gold. Facing Ana Keyla Queiroz in the final, Vitoria saw herself locked in a more balanced match throughout the regulated time but still managed to keep the lead on the scoreboard, taking the win and the gold medal with a 5-3 score.
70kg - Gisele Tavares vs Giovanna Carneiro
Another GFTeam powerhouse rising to the top, Gisele Tavares overcame four opponents and became the 70kg division champion. Starting her campaign with a 5-0 win over Kamilla Souza, Gisele went on to beat Sabatha Lais via decision and then submitted Barbara Moraes for a shot at the title, going up against the tough-as-nails Giovanna Carneiro in the final. On her side of the bracket, Giovanna landed a whopping 15-2 score over Gabriela Corvalan, submitted Maria Gonzaga, and outscored Izadora Silva by 3-1 before entering the gold round, but all her experience and technical know-how were not enough to stop Gisele from taking and maintaining the lead throughout the regulated time, with the latter coming out victorious with a narrow 2-0 score to take the top spot on the podium.
95kg - Yara Nascimento vs Luane Carvalho
Reasserting her dominance over the 95kg division, the Fratres Brazilian Jiu Jitsu representative Yara Nascimento added another title to her resumé on the second day of the ADGS Rio. After submitting Katiane Rodrigues in the semifinal, Yara advanced to the gold round and went up against Luane Carvalho, who outscored the likes of Mikaela de Lima and Tamiris Silva to have a shot at the title. The duel, however, was almost a completely one-sided show as Yara used her game and pressure to put Luane in a tough spot as the former continued to score again and again. At the end of it all, a 5-0 score gave Yara the win and the gold medal.
