ADGS Miami: Johnatha Alves reveals what he likes about fighting in AJP

August 2, 2023

On September 16th and 17th, the touristic city of Miami, Florida, will receive the elite of competitive Jiu-Jitsu. The long-awaited Abu Dhabi Grand Slam Jiu-Jitsu World Tour Miami, which will be held at the Watsco Center, promises yet another show of fights and organization, an excellence that is vouched by none other than Johnatha Alves, current welterweight champion of the event.

An Art of Jiu-Jitsu athlete and disciple of two-time Abu Dhabi World Pro champion Rafael Mendes, Johnatha aims to follow in his master's footsteps and have a great career in the organization. Backed by the experience gained at ADGS editions in the USA, Johnatha talked with our team and pointed out the main reasons that keep him active in AJP tournaments.

"Having weigh-ins one day before the competition was one of the main allures", Johnata tells us. "It allows us to fully focus on performance without worrying about cutting weight on the same day. This careful approach not only has positive impacts on our physical aptitude but also our mental well-being."

In addition to the weigh-ins designed to be primarily beneficial to the athletes, Johnatha also saves some praise for the always comfortable USA competing facilities. He highlights the separated warm-up areas, which provide a more secluded spot to get ready for the fight.

"The separate warm-up areas for the athletes was a brilliant idea. It provides a specific space for us to mentally and physically prepare for our fights, away from distractions and the crowd. The screens in the warm-up area that allow us to follow the fights are also amazing. Staying up to date on tournament progress keeps us engaged and mentally involved in the tournament."

As if all this technical structure wasn't enough for the athlete to maintain his focus on the results, Johnatha stressed the importance of having a summary of the black belt finals, with specific times and areas to highlight even more of what's best in the event.

"Another aspect that really highlights the importance of these tournaments is the decision to schedule all black belt finals on the main mat. This not only allows us to showcase our skills to a larger audience but also adds an extra layer of emotion and prestige to the final fights. These seemingly simple but carefully thought-out details make a huge difference in how athletes feel about the event. We feel more professional, valued, and comfortable, enhancing our overall experience."
