ADGS Rio: Youths and Amateurs take over the mats in the first day of the event
July 19, 2025
The time has come for the Abu Dhabi Grand Slam World Tour to return to the tropical landscape of Brazil, bringing one of the AJP's most challenging competitions to the South American country. Held between July 19th and 20th, the ADGS Rio de Janeiro took over the Arena Carioca 1 for a weekend of high-octane action with talented athletes from all over the world vying for gold, glory, and a whopping 3000 global ranking points.
Opening the competition this Saturday, July 19th, the promising athletes from the Youth and Amateur categories stepped up to the battlefield ready to show their skills, conquer the top of the podium, and rack up the valuable experience they'll need to advance to the next stage of their careers. Starting with the former group, the blue belt Thiago Dias proved himself a dangerous competitor as he climbed the 55kg bracket and conquered the title. With three fights to reach the gold medal, Thiago managed to beat both João Barbosa and Thallyson Silva in the bracket before reaching the final and landing a comfortable 12-6 score over Miguel Pereira to take the top of the podium for the Galo Association team.
Still on the Youth side, The Den's representative Agatha Silva went through the 63kg division like a freight train and overcame three opponents to become the champion. With submission wins over Ana Carvalho and Vanessa Santos on her way up the bracket, Agatha reached the final at full throttle to face Lauriene Maria for the title, quickly taking the lead on the scoreboard and putting it at 12-1 before ultimately submitting her third consecutive fight around the four-minute mark.
Meanwhile, on the Amateur side, the blue belt Victor Severiano showed his prowess as he tore through the 77kg division. Starting in the eight-finals, the GFTeam representative submitted Martin D'Assaro, Jonas Miranda, and Jhonatan Sanches before showing up for the gold round against Simone Grillo, with both sides locked in a 3-3 tie before Victor saw his chance and landed the winning submission halfway through the match.
On the women's side, the Força Jovem Universal representative Gabrielly Oliveira got the top spot on the podium. With three opponents on the bracket, Gabrielly kicked off her campaign with a submission win over Ester Amaral, also getting the three taps from Ana Virgílio to advance to the final. In the gold round, Gabrielly went up against Yasmin Silva in a match that, despite having no submissions, still was a almost entirely one-sided show by Gabrielly, with the athlete unleashing her game and taking both the win and the title with a 9-2 score.
With the first day concluded, the ADGS Rio now prepares to continue the action and welcome the Master and Professional categories to the mats this Sunday, July 30th.
