Jiu-Jitsu and Surf in Abu Dhabi: Fight the ADWPJJC and enjoy the biggest wave pool in the world
June 24, 2023
Have you ever thought about traveling to the United Arab Emirates, competing in the Abu Dhabi World Pro Jiu-Jitsu Championship, and then surfing one of the best waves in the world? You might think the latter is a bit far-fetched, given the UAE's desertic setting, but technology has come a long way, and now the best of both worlds is available for tourists looking to visit the country this year.
An ambitious and bold project announced earlier in June, the United Arab Emirates has begun the construction of one of the world's biggest wave pools on Hudayriyat Island in Abu Dhabi. With the project scheduled to be completed in late 2023, Jiu-Jitsu enthusiasts will not only be able to compete at the ADWPJJC but also enjoy artificial waves that give even the sea a run for its money. The undertaking is led by none other than the 11-time surfing world champion Kelly Slater and his homonymous artificial wave pool company, Kelly Slater Wave Co.
Jiu-Jitsu and surfing have always gone hand in hand. From its inception, the fighting sport has been sought by sea athletes, an interest further cemented by the sports' similar philosophies and shared focus on providing its practitioners with a healthy way of life. With decades of investment and passion for the gentle art, Abu Dhabi has been a staunch supporter of Jiu-Jitsu and now, in 2023, it turns its gaze to surfing, leading yet another sport into a new chapter of its history.
"Time Out Abu Dhabi" reports that the Surf Abu Dhabi pool will cover an impressive expansion of 51 million square meters, surpassing its competitors by a considerable margin. For scale, the Surf Ranch in California, also made by the Kelly Slater Wave Co, measures only 700 meters. The goal is to create a facility that will proudly showcase the longest ride, largest barrel, and biggest human-made wave pool in the world.
That's not to mention all the other attractions that only Abu Dhabi can offer its tourists, so don't waste any time and start planning your next tournament alongside the Jiu-Jitsu elite now.
